Among the variety of essential oils, there are those that are considered “feminine” in their aroma and therapeutic effect.
Let me introduce you to the essential oils duo that in my opinion are the best for women: geranium and clary sage.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) is referred by many as the most desirable essential oil to use for hormonal imbalance. Although the oil contains more than sixty compounds, the main constituents are citronellol and geraniol, both of which belong to terpenoid group of alcohols (not to be confused with ethyl alcohol) known for hormone balancing effect. Clinical evaluations have found that the alcohol geraniol has a balancing effect on the autonomic nervous system, which stimulates hormonal production and response. Balance of your autonomic nervous system is absolutely essential for maintaining a healthy and fully functioning human organism – body, mind and emotions.
Besides, as with most adaptogenic essential oils, geranium acts to gently balance extreme states, such as nervousness, depression, anxiety and mood swings, all of which are known to be the symptoms of hormone imbalance.
The other wonderful properties of this essential oil include: an excellent skincare oil (suitable for all skin types), anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, detoxifying, diuretic, and many other (click here for more details).
Geranium’s aroma is heady and exotic, delightfully fresh, sweet, floral and sensuous.
Caution: due to the hormonal effect, avoid during pregnancy.
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) also contains constituents of the terpenoid group of alcohol (such as linalyl acetate) that are mostly responsible for its hormone balancing and calming actions. It may be especially helpful for relieving stressful or tense physical and emotional states, like migraine headaches.
The oil has a musky-amber aroma, with a sweet nutty herbaceous scent. In Ayurvedic medicine, sweet aromas like clary sage are used to regulate and pacify both Vata and Pitta imbalances. Symptoms of Vata imbalance are premenstrual syndrome, insomnia, nervousness and anxiety / worry. Symptoms of Pitta imbalance include feelings of frustration and anger, a tendency to emotional upset and overreaction, high blood pressure and inability to relax and go with the flow.
Besides hormone balance, the main therapeutic properties of clary sage include: wonderful cell regenerating action, especially useful for aged skin/wrinkles and against acne; can be used as aphrodisiac; for muscle aches and pains (e.g. after physical exercises); for respiratory infections (used through steam inhalations) etc. For more properties, please click here.
Caution: as clary sage can stimulate a narcotic-like effect for some people (especially if alcohol has been consumed), it may cause them to feel dizzy or light-headed (or exaggerate drunkenness). Please avoid use when driving, needing to focus or with consumption of alcohol. Also, this oil is better to be avoided during pregnancy.
