Peppermint Essential Oil

Everyone can recognize the scent of mint. Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is a perennial herb with small lilac, pink or white flowers, with a fresh, bright and penetrating aroma. For the production of essential oil, flowering tops and leaves of the plant are used.

A bit of history and traditions:

Peppermint is grown in Egypt, China, Japan and around the world, but the main producer is the USA. For thousands of years, people in Asia, Egypt, and the Americas have used this plant for digestive problems and to freshen their breath. In the Middle Ages, peppermint began to be widely used in Europe against colic, gas formation, heartburn and headaches. It was also believed that mint had aphrodisiac properties, so it was added to perfumes.

In terms of therapeutic properties of peppermint essential oil, it is proved to stimulate the nervous system, is widely used for nausea and dizziness and to sharpen concentration. The oil helps to relax the muscular system and to ease pain from inflammation. It stimulates appetite, relieves intestinal spasms and balances intestinal flora. It clears the airways when congested. Very effective as an insect repellent and helps to relieve itching from bites.

In subtle aromatherapy peppermint is suitable for restoring the throat chakra (No. 5), as well as the third eye (No. 6) and solar plexus (No. 3). The energetic qualities of peppermint contribute to a clear perception, awareness and understanding of present situation. This oil inspires insight and uncovers personal talents. It helps to clearly express thoughts and symbolically “digest” new ideas.

Personally, I always keep a bottle of peppermint essential oil on my desk and often inhale it during long hours at the computer to improve my mental focus. Keep in mind that when doing so you need to inhale carefully so that the bottle dispenser does not touch the nose or lips, otherwise a burning sensation on the skin may appear. If this still happens, do not try to wash off the essential oil with water, it is better to apply a little vegetable oil on a cotton swab and gently treat the burning area. And always remember that essential oils are a very concentrated and must always be diluted when applied to the skin.
