Besides essential oils, many other natural raw materials are used to make aromatherapy products. These are vegetable oils, natural salts, hydrosols, herbs, clays and butters, and many more. I would like to let you explore some of those that I use in my handmade organic products.
- Floral water is a very versatile product. It is a mixture of distilled water and essential or absolute oils. It is commonly used in making aromatherapy products in place of normal water, or can be used on its own in several ways, such as: a facial toner / spray; a deodorant; laundry spray; a refreshing room fragrance; hair rinse; a fragrant addition to a soothing bath.
- Carrier vegetable oils are extracted from different parts of the plants (e.g. seeds and kernels) and unlike essential oils, do not have odor nor evaporate. They are commonly used in creams and lotions to nourish and moisturize the skin. Among them, jojoba is one of the most well known and used, especially in face and body care products, in hair treatments, as a facial cleanser and makeup remover.
- Butters and waxes are those ingredients that mostly act as emulsifiers while providing the maximum nourishment to the skin. Personally, I like to use beeswax and cocoa butter in my products. Beeswax is a pure natural wax secreted by bees. It can perform many different functions and act as a thickener, texturizer, emulsifier, moisturizer and skin protector. Some of its most popular applications are in candle making, skin care, hair care, and cosmetics. Cocoa butter is obtained from the whole cocoa bean and contains healthy fats with a host of antioxidants. With a strong chocolate aroma, this butter is an excellent skin protector, with nourishing and softening properties. For this reason, it is used a lot in recipes for lip balms, body butters, ointments, etc. As for me, I love cocoa butter in my foot and hand care recipe, which has become a favorite with my customers. This balm is recommended for repairing dry heels with cracks and it is also suitable for the care of hands and elbows, as well as for relieving eczema.
- Vitamin E and vegetable glycerin. These ingredients have double effect: they help enhance the antimicrobial effect in the production of natural cosmetics, and at the same time pocess beneficial properties. Vitamin E has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, strengthens the skin’s natural barrier and prevents moisture loss. In addition, it acts as a preservative and helps prevent changes in the product under the influence of light. Glycerin also has a preservative effect, as well as moisturizing the skin and stabilizing the structure of cosmetics.
- Clays and muds are widely used as components of masks, exfoliants, deodorants and creams. They are rich in minerals and pocess antimicrobial properties. They help cleanse and tighten the skin by exfoliating dead sells and pulling the impurities out of the skin. The most commonly used clays are kaolin (white) and French green clay. You can find more information about the benefits of the Dead Sea mud in the Blog post here.
These are just a few of the all-natural ingredients used in aromatherapy products. Hoping this article gives you a better idea of all the benefits of organic products for your health and well-being, as well as for the environment.
