The benefits of Lavender essential oil for home use

Lavender essential oil is one of the mildest and most commonly used oils in aromatherapy.

Did you know that it was thanks to lavender that such a direction of alternative medicine as aromatherapy was born? Back in 1881, a famous French chemist and perfumer René-Maurice Gattefossé severely burned both his hands during his experiments, and accidentally poured lavender essential oil on them which happened to be nearby. The result of the healing was so amazing that this incident was the beginning of a deep interest and research into the therapeutic qualities of essential oils, which continues to this day.

Please note that there are a few varieties of Lavender essential oil, which will be reviewed in detail in a separate post. The below benefits and applications refer to the most popular and commonly available True Lavender, with a botanical name of Lavandula angustifolia (or Lavandula officinalis).

Here are some of the benefits of having a True Lavender essential oil at home:

  • As you have probably guessed, it can be used to treat any burns; apply undiluted to the affected area(s).
  • It can help relieve the insect bites and itching; apply undiluted to the affected area(s).
  • Its sedative properties help with anxiety and insomnia; inhale directly from the bottle or apply a few drops to the pillow corners. You can also use it in a diffuser if you have one, or add a couple of drops diluted in a tbsp of unscented castile soap to your bath before bedtime.
  • It can be used to prevent the head lice (a hot topic for any parent during the school year); apply a couple of drops on the hairline at the back of the head and behind the ears.
  • First aid for sun burns: dilute 2-3 drops of Lavender essential oil in about 1 tsp of Aloe Vera gel, mix well and gently apply to the affected area(s). For children below 10 years of age reduce the amount of Lavender to 1 drop per 1 tsp. In addition to the healing properties of Lavender, aloe vera gel is good for cooling the skin.

And these are just a few of the ways to benefit from this wonderful oil. Generally safe to use with children over 5 years old, True Lavender has no contraindications known.

As a general caution for any essential oil, it is for external use only. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
