Aromatherapy for Hair

Certain plant oils and essential oils are perfect for using in hair care products for nourishing and conditioning, stimulating and strengthening hair growth, giving hair shine and protecting against environmental influences. Since the scalp is absorbent, it is always better to use natural and organic hair products and treatments, and the easiest way to do that is to add the essential oil(s) of your choice to a fragrant-free shampoo made from 100% natural ingredients. Please see below for some essential oils suggestions depending on your hair type and treatment purpose.

Alternatively, your can make a simple yet effective scalp and hair treatment by yourself, here is how to do that: in a glass container combine 3-5 tbsp. of carrier oil warmed up to about 40C (e.g., coconut or castor oil), add 15-20 drops of essential oil of your choice, mix well. Rub gently into the scalp and distribute evenly over the entire length of the hair, cover with a cap and leave for about an hour. Shampoo your hair thoroughly  and condition as desired. Coconut oil is quite easy to rinse off, whereas if using castor oil, you may need to reapply the shampoo and rinse your hair additionally. This treatment can be done once every two weeks or more often.

Which essential oils to choose for hair care?

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is considered the most beneficial for hair, as it stimulates hair growth and prevents premature baldness. Suitable for all hair types.

Lemon (Citrus limon) is a good choice for improving blood circulation, reducing fragility and restoring shine, especially for natural or colored blondes.

Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) reduces hair greasiness, therefore it is mostly effective for oily hair. It also helps fight dandruff.

For dry and brittle hair, use a mixture of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) essential oils.
